Rachel Carter was a marine biologist and writer of the famous environm ental book Silent Spring. This book revealed the harmful effects of pesticides and hugely influenced the general population’s awareness of human impact on nature. It also contributed to the foundation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Born in 1907, Rachel showed a talent for writing from a very young age, contributing to children’s magazines as a child. Her love of nature shone through throughout her education, and she was awarded a master’s degree in zoology in 1932. She had to leave university to help support her family financially, yet she didn’t give up on her passion for the environment.
